I'm in Germany. It's good to be with my parents. My dad is getting better and is feeling pretty chipper but isn't out of the hospital yet. We hope he will be released tomorrow, to spend another week or two in the hotel here in Marl. Then it's back to Cyprus for them.

I'm dealing rather well with the jet lag, if I do say so myself. I had a 45-minute long conversation in French (wait, aren't I in Germany? I know, but I don't speak German) with my Moroccan taxi driver. I also (note duration of taxi ride) paid for the most expensive taxi ride I've ever had, 90 Euros + 5 Euro tip. On the way back to the airport on Tuesday, I will take the train. I don't know how much it will be but it only takes an hour and it's gotta be cheaper. Plus I'll get to experience those famous German train schedules first hand.

I haven't had any astoundingly German food, but I have had some good beer.

Insert obligatory Homer impersonation here.

I've been doing a bit of reading on travel in Europe (focused on Paris rather than Germany). Airport trains are rich pickings for local thieves. Be most vigilant at any stop. A favorite tactic for thieves is to wait just as the doors are closing, nab a bit of luggage as the owner is relaxing and dive out onto the platform to safety.

He doesn't even have to run to escape as the train carries his victim helplessly away and will be long gone before there is any chance to contact law enforcement to make an official report.

I hope I'm not telling you anything you've already learned by experience.

I ended up speaking French to a lot of people in Germany, since my German is really poor and French was something we could all communicate in.

And you're making me a bit nostalgic. I haven't been back to Europe in at least fifteen years now, and part of me still considers it home.

Happy you made it there safely. I can't think of anything to do there since I've never been there, but trying on Lederhosen sounds like it could be entertaining...but overall, probably just a waste of time. Hope you and your family stay in relativly good health.
