We went to a ball at the Italian Embassy on Friday night. It was fun - the Italian Embassy is beautiful and they know how to throw a party!

My man looked very debonair.

(I look less freaky if you view the image at a larger size.)

The secret to DC is that you can actually get into embassy events pretty regularly if you try. This, for example, was the inaugural ball for AU's new president. I work at AU, so no problem getting tickets. It just happened to be at the Italian embassy.

what fun

Man. If I lived there, I'd be doing that all the time.

Can you just show up in formalwear and try to get in? Of do you need some connection to get an invitation?

Depends on the event. The fancier events are likely to need some kind of invitation, although those are not so hard to get (I just got invited to a reception at the Bulgarian embassy). The more casual events, you just need to find out about them (they are posted on listservs and things all the time) and then show up. Of course, those don't usually involve formal-wear and dancing.

I've been to the Bulgarian Embassy in DC. Bulgaria is known for it's Rose Oil...or at least that's what I remember from the tour.
