A Real Update
May. 30th, 2006 09:47 pmJob: It's going pretty well. I am getting the hang of things and am getting used to managing people and a lot (to me) of money. It's still a bit alien, though. I like it all right; most days I enjoy what I'm doing. I feel more confident, and I'm finding new things to like about it as I go, which is cool. Today was my 30th day (according to HR), and I got my paperwork turned in for medical, dental, all that stuff. Of course, I've been doing the job for 30 days beyond that, in reality. My boss seems to think I am doing a good job so far; I have been complimented on the smoothness of the transition. Still, I am working more hours than I'm supposed to, because I really want things to work well. This is both good and bad.
Home: Things with the wonderful
azure_armand are good. The cats are healthy. We just signed a two-year lease on our apartment which is a little scary but guarantees our rent will not go up. In our neighborhood, right now, that's pretty valuable.
Weekend: The Memorial Day weekend was filled with: chaperoning a middle-school dance, cleaning, going to see Pericles at the Shakespeare Free-For-All (like Shakespeare In The Park but with a bigger budget), going to the National Arboretum not once but twice (it's nice to sit around in the shade on a hot sunny day), going to Corrosion, the Sunday night Goth night we'd been meaning to check out, eating lentil loaf and ice cream sundaes (not simultaneously)... It was pretty busy, really. I felt good about the weekend.
School: Yep, still have a paper looming over my head. With the 3-day Memorial weekend break under my belt, I may finally feel like I can concentrate on that again. Wish me luck! ... I'm sort of keeping my hand in academically by going to a 2-day weekend course in a week or so; I get no credit for it but I'm interested (it's on Cultures of International Development) and I've arranged it so I don't have to pay anything for it.
Other stuff: I'm excited to have time to sew and do some other things again. I miss my partner in crime, though, especially when it comes time to sewing. I don't really have any buddies for that sort of thing around here. I'm also excited about camping, we have tentative plans to go out and do that in mid-June. AndI'm looking for plane tickets to go to MN for July 4th. I bought plane tickets: I arrive in MSP at 9:23 on June 30th; I leave MSP at 4:50PM on the 4th and arrive in DC at 8:16PM. Oooh, I'm so smart. I'm so smart that now I'm going to have to pay a change fee, on top of the exorbitant price for my plane ticket. No really. Who thought it was smart to put CON after the 4th? *thumphead*
...it's hot here, but not like MN. Weird, that y'all have it both colder and hotter (well, hotter for now).
Strange how quickly I can sum up a month or more of not really updating.
