The Rumpass in Bumpass triathlon is over! I'm exhausted but much more at ease than I was yesterday. I think I will sleep very well tonight.
I probably beat my overall time at the Philly triathlon, but the biking distance was shorter. Results for today aren't up yet. When they are I'll update this post.
The swim was really hard. 62 degree water is COLD. Swimming in a wetsuit, the only strokes that really work well are crawl and backstroke, so there goes my resting-stroke of the sidestroke, which I used 50% of the time while training. The cold cold water I think made me feel more out of breath more quickly. I made it okay... but ugh.
The biking portion was difficult too. Quite hilly and ... I think I had not practiced enough on real hills (the bike machine at the gym is perhaps not enough) and had barely used the bike I rode today. I rode it a bit yesterday but before that, the last time I'd gotten on it was the time I broke my elbow. So that was probably not ideal. But that bike is back to its rightful owner now. So before I do my next tri (I do not think the next one will be this year, although there is a women's sprint tri in Minneapolis in mid-August) I will have to buy a bike, and then practice on it.
The running went surprisingly well. That was what I thought would be the hardest - but it was basically fine. There was a woods/trail run portion that was difficult (it's hard to avoid tripping on roots when you are already tired) but most of it went okay. I gave myself permission to walk on some of the uphills and that helped a lot with my overall time and feeling, I think. Maybe next time I will walk less, but I think it was the right thing to do on this race.
Everyone in our group made it through and finished healthy (no asthma attacks, hypothermia, overheating, etc.). Most of them kicked my ass and I am proud of all of us!
