I just signed a petition to the members of the Senate Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee, who now determine Joe Lieberman's fate as Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.

Harry Reid has told Lieberman that he has to go, but Joe is now openly threatening the caucus. If you feel inclined, please sign this petition and let them know that Lieberman must go, once and for all.

Thanks!

P.S. I like some Joes very much indeed; just not Lieberman.

Has he? There seems to be a lot of talk about just what Lieberman's punishment will be.

And yet, if say PE Obama intercedes on Liebermans, and Lieberman maintains his position, PE Obama gets a relatively easy chit in his pocket to call up when he needs it.

Do the Dems really need to antagonize someone who regularly caucuses with them if it costs them the possibility of a supermajority?

Granted, I'm not a fond of any party having a supermajority but it seems stupid from a political standpoint to assume that Lieberman will always vote with the Dems.

Lieberman clearly does not always vote with the Dems, so I'm certainly not assuming that. Also, the "members" that this is addressed to does not include PE Obama, so I at least am not asking Obama to intercede here.

I knew that PE Obama wasn't your audience. I was merely trying to point out a feasible political argument where you wouldn't get your wish because it could run counter to PE Obama's goals and strategies.

You may be right. I find this (http://whatever.scalzi.com/2008/11/13/whats-really-going-on-with-joe-lieberman/) a rather funny interpretation of exactly what you predicted. :-)

This almost makes me wonder if that's the goal. Not to oust Lieberman, but to own him.

PE Obama's interceding on Liebermans behalf does do that and more importantly it gives Obama a chit outside having to wrangle votes through Sen. Reid and Rep. Pelosi's lines. If PE Obama is the student of history he appears to be he knows that he can't count on a majority on in both houses to always get what he wants, (that hasn't exactly worked well for several past presidents) so he has to have chits to call in if he needs to end run around Reid and Pelosi.

Additionally, by interceding on Leibermans behalf he also gets the extra added bonus of looking conciliatory and bipartisan. It also goes against the old saw 'The Right looks for converts, the Left looks for heretics'

Thanks for this post
Ever since he was elected as an "independent" I've disliked Lieberman. It felt good to make even a token gesture.
