It's a matter of style, not correctness. There is nothing wrong with using "farther" and "further" interchangeably. If one wants to use "farther" only for physical distance and "further" for everything else, that's fine, but let no one tell you that one is right and the other wrong (unless, of course, the source telling you is your client's mandated style...).
