Yesterday I learned that my ex, D - the significant one before Joe - is in the hospital in a coma.

D's mother was diagnosed with familial amyloidosis a number of years ago. Weirdly, I am familiar with this very unusual disease, because primary amyloidosis is what my Aunt Marilyn died of in 2005. Familial amyloidosis is genetic and hereditary, and is manageable (although not curable) through medical intervention. D's mom is doing fairly well (I saw her a month or two ago). Unfortunately, D never got tested for it, despite apparently having some warning signs, because he was afraid that if he was diagnosed with it that he would never be able to get health insurance again.*

He collapsed a day ago at his job, having experienced severe damage to his heart and kidneys. Apparently he was without oxygen to his brain for 25 minutes. He is now in a hospital, in a coma, with very little brain activity. It is very unlikely that he will recover.

The only thing I can say that comforts me at all is that he and I had managed, in the last couple of years, to be friendly again, if not particularly close.

What a terrible loss. And how awful for his family and those who are close to him now.

... Update: He died today.

*And this is what is wrong with our health care system.

Oh, damnit.

For the record, if you've got a diagnosis, and then can manage to stay insured, you're fine. It's the gaps in the insurance that then let the insurance companies screw you over.

Yes, that would do it. It's why, once I got on individual insurance, I haven't risked getting off despite sometimes having contract jobs that included insurance.

God damned insurance. I wish we lived in a civilized country.

Oof, that's awful. Sorry for your loss.

I know other people who have failed to get conditions taken care of because of health insurance fears and died. I really wish that things were different in this country.

I am so very sorry, Beth, for what you're feeling right now. And yes, what a tragedy that our fucked up health care system prevented him from seeking care that might have prevented this tragedy.

Among other things.

I'm sorry.

I didn't know you dated him.

James Graham and i were at the hospital last night with him for a good bit. We tried to have hope, but it was so very clear that he just wasn't there anymore. There's a thing for him tomorrow in New Brighton and his proper memorial will likely be this weekend.

He was a dear friend an and all around good person. So not fair.
