Arabic toasts my brain every time I work on it for more than a couple of hours. And I have 7.5 hours of class a week, and close to that amount of homework. Okay, maybe 5 hours of homework. That equals a lot of brain toast.

But hey, it's good for me. And I'm learning a lot. And I'm doing well, actually, so far. Hooray!

I should note: many thanks too [livejournal.com profile] tomscud, who has been helping me out a lot.

I don't know how well I will ultimately do with actually learning this language - I am presently at the point of learning the alphabet, so we're talking pretty basic beginner! Don't knock being able to read! Have you found your language skills getting better during your trips to Germany? (I seem to recall you've been there.)

nope, because my problem in conversing in other languages is that if i cannot visualize the word that is coming out of someones mouth, i have no clue what they are saying.

i did get lost in the east side of berlin, drunk at 1am, alone, while it was snowing, and yet managed to get a beer, the bathroom, a cab and talk about the snow with this old man who owned the bar that didn't speak a word of english.

i think i'm better at other languages when i'm drunk.

Very likely true. I found I did better at German when I was really tired or distracted than I was when I was wide awake and focused. The more I focused my conscious mind on it the more difficult it became for me. If I just spoke or listened without thinking about it I did much better.

Neat! I mean, that you're studying it and doing well, even if it is confusing.

I'm considering trying to learn Italian.
