Home improvement
Jul. 16th, 2012 11:35 amSaturday, we went to Home Depot and BOUGHT ALL THE THINGS. Exhausting: we had to take a break halfway through, leave the store and have a snack and sit on a bench in the shade. But also productive. We crossed items off of a massive list that included paint, bathroom vanity, toilet, linoleum floor tiles for bathroom and kitchen, drywall, 2x4s, copper pipe fittings, basement shelves for storage, and on and on. It was about a $1500 trip and I'm sure there will be more in the future. But we got a LOT of what we needed in that $1500.
Sunday, we had a wonderful group of people show up and help us work on the house.

Thanks, guys! (Click on the picture above for more pictures from Sunday.)
* washer and dryer moved to basement, reconnected other than dryer hose, need longer one
* wallpaper 90% off, only some bits at top of walls remaining. This is HUGE.
* one or two walls sanded
* 2 bedrooms taped, spackled, and prepped for painting
* kitchen upper cabinets carefully removed; soffits demolished; floor half ripped up
* all the stuff that was in the van is now in the house, and the van got returned to the excellent person who'd loaned it to us.
* bathroom wet wall largely demolished, which is frightening to me but I understand it's necessary to make the improvements we need to make
And then we took everyone to Flamingo, our local East African/Ethiopian/Eritrean place, for a delicious dinner.
We will likely be doing this, or something like it, every Sunday until we get moved. We don't anticipate having such a sizable crew be able to make it again, but we do appreciate any and all help we get - and will pay it forward!
