I don't know if I'll use it or not, but I got a Dreamwidth account. You know, all the cool kids are doing it, or something.

Is this the new replacement for lj?

Basically. One thing in their favor is they don't have the thing that lots of people on lj are pissed about, the "repost to facebook/twitter" option. Although that potential privacy violation makes me unhappy, I think I disabled it on lj by changing my settings:
http://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/?cat=extensions
so that isn't a huge deal to me right now. It's more, if a significant number of people whose content I like migrate over there, then I may go there too (even if it results in double posting here and there), because the content is all I'm here for.

Yeah, it would be nice to have everyone migrate over. I would like to be done with this site.

Interesting. Looks like the exact same journal web software as LJ.

It's a fork; they took the codebase, and have been implementing new features and bug fixes at a rapid pace.

I have one too, just made it, ilex_cassine.

I don't know, there is already such low traffic on LJ, I worry about splitting what little interest there is in long form social websites up.

Me too. But I made an account there for that exact reason, in a way - if my content all goes there, I want to follow it. Or if half of it goes... I guess I'll try to stay on both.

It does look identical. I don't know if I'd switch over since I'd lose everything I've written here...but maybe I too should get an account just to try to keep my name...which is weird because I think that DW will be this place where a bunch of people join and either no-one uses, or they double up their posting...

If I get an account, I'd be doubling up, simply because I don't want to lose all my lj stuff, though if there was a way to backdate posts in dw, and they have a better archiving/search function then lj, I'd probably start moving everything over there...maybe...

Actually, do you have a code so I could resister. It sounds like a decent blog space and since it has a creative/artistic bent, it may be where I'm heading anyway.

I've requested one and will send it to you as soon as I get one.

BTW I may have been wrong about the "settings" thing fixing the reposting problem. That may only change the commenter's settings, not the original poster's. Which means it's back to begging people not to repost stuff from your journal on twitter/fb.

Good to know. With that and being able to import my stuff from LJ, it almost seems like a natural transition. I'm still not 100% sold. But I'll start an account and see what it is like for a few months before making a commited switch.
