I'm getting really tired of seeing job vacancies that sound awesome, and I'm almost qualified for, but really, I lack the number of years of relevant experience they want. I need to work for the person they're hiring. Where the heck are those jobs?

And there's a job at a nearby university that I am perfect for. PERFECT, I tell you. It's at their satellite campus in India, and I would love to spend a few years in India.

But, there's the aging dad and the worthless brother. I cannot go to India right now. *weeps*

They might be jobs specifically tailored for one person, and designed to exclude everyone else.

But for others, the qualifications might be a wish list. If you think you can finesse the number of years of relevent experience, apply anyway.

If I'm close, I'll apply. But when they want 7 years of experience with 2 of them active field work? I don't have that, and can't fake it. And more importantly, in the current job market, someone else will have that. Actually, like 6 or 8 other people will have that, and will all apply for the position.

I never heard from them formally, not once. But I did eventually find out from my contact at the organization that they'd hired someone else.

I hate not even being contacted to tell me that I didn't get it.

Oh do I hear you. We're hiring for my boss right now. So that's a mid/upper level IT manager type. The three people they trotted past us last week were all overqualified to some degree, and all had been laid off for over 6 months. That tells us they had a lot of applicants, had the luxury of picking from multiple ideal candidates, and didn't have to compromise a minimum-qual to get the required top 3 list. I know of one local who applied, but didn't have one of the minimums. He didn't even make the first cut. In a job market like this, it's harsh.

Yeah. I know people are receiving hundreds of applicants for positions. It's awful. And I honestly don't know at this point if it's a handicap or an asset to be somewhat overqualified for a job (which I am, for some of the jobs I've applied for).

I've run into this, too. My solution is to step up my networking efforts, much as I hate networking, because the only way I'm going to get a job in my chosen field is to know someone.

I would really like to reduce my hours at work a little so that I had some time to volunteer. I think volunteering might help me get my foot in the door.
