Dear lazyweb,

If I print on ink jet labels using a laserjet printer, what will the results be? Disaster? Smoke and fire? No problems? Weird colors?

Love,

me.

The risk is the adhesive reacting poorly to the high heat required of the laserjet. At a guess, the most likely failure mode would be labels wrapping themselves around the first roller after the fuser. A big, sticky mess but no smoke.

Ding...though honestly I've accidentally printed on ink jet labels that are newer and had no problems.

Ya, that. Bug sticky mess, no smoke, but lots of work (possibly including repair man) getting the labels out.

Though I've done it many times with no problems, I've also seen the repair guy pulling a dozen labels out of the inner workings of the printer...

Yeah...

You really have to watch out for transparencies too.

Inkjet ink won't stick to laser printer transparency film.

Inkjet transparency film can end up as a molten blob in the laser printer fuser.

(Up until now, I wasn't even aware there were labels specifically for inkjets)

I tried printing on inkjet business card stock with a laser printer and it came out streaky and terrible.

What the guy who came out to repair the laser printer told me is that ink jet labels have a coating on them that helps the ink to stick, in a laser printer that uses high heat, that coating melts and sticks to the insides of the printer. I saw the outcome, it was a big old mess.

Go buy laser printer lables, you'll be happier.

Thanks. Unfortunately they don't seem to make the shape/color label I want in anything but inkjet, so I think I will have to find an inkjet printer instead. :-) But with everyone's advice here, I will not try running them through my laser printer!
