Visitors in town!
Oct. 23rd, 2006 12:16 amWow, that visit went fast!
On Thursday night,
spacebug and her mom arrived. I went straight from work (managing to forget to do a couple of things at work, but not huge things), and met them with
azure_armand at Metro Center. (We also saw
heydanno, really briefly.) From there we went on to Chinatown and had a great dinner at Chinatown Garden. I think we'll be having those leftovers tonight.
Friday we met the ladies at the Lincoln memorial, and then walked to Teaism for lunch. I love Teaism. After that, we went to Mount Vernon. We took a Gray Line tour from Union Station, because that's what Azure & Spacebug's mom wanted to do, and she paid for it, which was really nice of her. I have to say I thought the tour aspect was a rip-off. It was $37 each, but entry to Mount Vernon was only $13, so she paid $24 per person for the privelige of being driven out there - there was no additional guiding done, and the driver/guide almost made me crazy on the drive by talking about dull stuff and repeating it multiple times. But I did really enjoy seeing Mount Vernon. It was a beautiful day, so it was great to be outside (even if it was really windy). And I enjoyed checking out that place with good company. Dinner that night was at Busboys & Poets, and although we had to wait quite a while, I think everyone enjoyed it. I got a new book, 50 Simple Things You Can Do to Fight the Right, which I look forward to reading and passing on. The younger set finished up the night at the Wonderland Ballroom, which is staggering distance from our place and is yet another reason why
alisgray needs to visit us.
Saturday I went fabric shopping (while others attempted to go to the Ford Theater and succeeded in going to the sculpture garden) and then met up with everyone at JavaGreen for lunch. Yum. (We did a lot of good eating this weekend.) We spent the afternoon going to the Smithsonian Natural History museum. After that it was time to head home, pick up the projector etc., and go to watch the Rollergirls game by webcast! After a stressful several minutes trying to get the dratted thing to work, we did succeed, and, joined by our friends Chris and Jenny, had a great time drinking beer, eating pizza, and cheering on the MN Rollergirls. Alas! Our girls did not quite manage to pull off a victory, but they fought hard and were defeated honorably. The projector, beer, pizza, and company all worked quite well, though. After that the younger crew found dessert and a drink at Open City. Although it was nice not to have to fight for a seat (as we would have had to at Tryst, its sister establishment), we did find that the service was... eh. The food was pretty good, though, and we all enjoyed a little lengthening of our evening. A brisk walk home was good to work off a few of the many calories I piled on that day.
Today we got some coffee and breakfast, went to the Ford Theater, and wandered around a bit in that area. We took the obligatory walk to the White House and I somewhat perfunctorily flipped it off. I was amused to see a man wearing a giant George Bush mask out front who was carrying a sign that said "I <3 Greed and Debauchery" or something like that. We went to Georgetown afterwards and spent some time exploring there, finishing up with a late lunch at Amma Vegetarian, a great little Indian place which is relatively inexpensive, especially for Georgetown. Mmm, masala dosai. And then we took our visitors back to the airport, which was a bit of a bummer. Although I needed my alone time, the visit did go too quickly.
After we came home I got my alone time, and worked on a project. I think I just chipped my tooth a teeny bit while doing some sewing, actually (I was being stupid and using my teeth instead of a plier to pull a needle through a tough piece of material - I won't do that again!). Drat. Time to call a dentist. However, I did just successfully make a big neon-green furry six-sided die to serve as a pincushion, which makes me happy. Next step: things made of fleece. I have a pile of fleece the size of a small child in my living room, and several projects in mind!
