Aug. 23rd, 2006 11:24 amI keep meaning to update, and have been too busy - or too tired - to do it. So I'll try to keep this one brief, in the interests of actually finishing it...
Work:
Very busy. On Monday we had New Faculty Orientation for the whole university, which went off smoothly, thanks to the fabulous
maever and the other folks in the office (but mostly thanks to Maeve). The whole office is much calmer now that's over.
With the students coming back to campus, all of the sudden it's crowded here again. And phone calls are rolling in for Blackboard help - calls that largely, I can transfer on to someone else, as it's technically Not My Job Anymore, but which still keep me hoppin'. We're trying to make sure that all of the labs are up to speed, and so on, for the new semester.
We're also hiring a new manager. I talked about this before, but man, that process has been stressful. The manager of the New Media Center (CTE's Mac lab and also motion graphics/video editing studio) left after almost 6 years. We were blessed with a large number of really great candidates. What both sucked and was good is that I already knew four of them, and one is a close friend. So, the good part, 4 candidates are people I already know and like. The bad part... we can't hire someone just because they're nice, and we only have one job to give. I'm only 1/4 of the hiring committee, so it's not like I make the decision... but it's still hard for me. I think we have reaced a decision which will be public soon, but the higher-ups have to approve it... and then we have to communicate the good (for one) and bad (for the others) news to the candidates.
The staff in my office is changing over slightly; we have a new graphic designer (who I think is working out really well), but we are losing the aforementioned
maever soon to go traveling. (Which I totally support, and am envious of!) We'll have a new person hired in her stead, but that person will have metaphorically big shoes to fill. So there's more transition.
I guess that kind of transition is just a part of working in academia. Better get used to it.
...
Home/social:
Things are good.
azure_armand is back to school this week, so we're both busy. We are usually pretty pleasantly busy on the weekends, although we really want to get out and do a little more camping again before it's too cold, and I wish I was doing more biking. DC weather is not so bad right now, gotta say. Other things to fit in include a night of dancing this weekend & a couple of upcoming visits (hooray!).
...Our upstairs neighbors are moving out (boo) but the one who's a good friend has bought a place only a few blocks away (yay!). Anyone cool want an apartment in DC? It ain't cheap, but it's nice, and you'd have great downstairs neighbors!
