Oh how far away I am from the level of fitness shown in this icon! So sad.

But I will use it because it's inspirational - I've been here, so I can do it again!

As you probably know, I'm all overcommitted and busy. I will now give a rather long, somewhat stressy, brain-dump about what I'm up to, and then I will babble about my feeble attempts to regain some level of fitness while managing stress. Like others, I'm mostly doing this for two reasons: to keep track, myself; and to inspire some kind of accountability.

For some silly reason I decided to get involved in the Minneapolis Fire Collective doing costuming. Which quickly became "design and make 90% of the costumes". That's two groups of 10 people, 3 costumes for one group, 2 for the other. Quick math! That's 50 costumes. Dress rehearsal is tomorrow.
Which reminds me - if you're in the Twin Cities, get yourself to Powderhorn Park around 8:30 this Thursday and watch the performance, for free. It should be pretty cool.

I will have all costumes done by tomorrow - well, at least done to the level where they can be worn, but they still need screen-printing etc. Oh, and then I decided to do safety for MFC too, because what the heck, I was at rehearsals anyway, and they needed safeties, and I can do that. So that renders Thursday evenings entirely gone, for ... some indeterminate amount of time until Burning Man.

There are other excellent things that take up a day here or an evening there, like my cousin visiting last weekend, and having dinner with my newly-vegan aunt tonight, and a 50th birthday party followed by the Spark Festival on Saturday, and hosting a sewing day on Sunday. All good! But it means that when someone asked if we wanted to do something that sounded fun on Friday, I was pretty reluctant.

The weekend of June 15-18 is in conflict, because Joe's headed off to Camp Fire with the MFC, an event where I'd be totally welcome and maybe should be at as a safety... but it conflicts with a visit from the awesome [personal profile] pants_of_doom as well as, you know, seeing other people and working on the projects I have in mind. I have at least two baby gifts to make, for example.

Other weekends feature weddings and more out-of-town friends visiting. Great stuff! And... yeah. Busy.

HOUSE. We close on the house on June 27th. We don't plan to move into it right away, because of all the busy stuff, especially the fact that CONvergence is right around the corner. But the house is a huge project. The bathroom needs work; we also want to strip the wallpaper, paint, and have the floors refinished. We want all of that done before we really move in. So we need to decide what to do ourselves and what to hire out, then find contractors and get them going.

CONvergence is coming, of course, and I'm helping with the Hospitality & Member Experience division management, and making costumes for myself & Joe, and contributing dribs and drabs to other efforts here and there. That's July 5-8, natch. I am very happy that I have arranged it so I am not obligated to anything at Con right now, other than making sure Ish gets to the Space Lounge at some point. :-) I can handle that. No room party, no responsibilities. It's a good thing. I'm really looking forward to Con this year.

So then after CONvergence comes moving, because hopefully the house stuff I mentioned before will be done. Even if it isn't done, I imagine we will start moving stuff over that isn't vital (books, sewing supplies, tchotchkes). Because we have to get things lined up to be out of our loft by sometime in mid-to-late August, date as yet undetermined but buyer lined up (hooray!!).

Right. And then Burning Man, August 27-Sept 3, we haven't figured out 90% of what we're doing for that yet. Oh well. It'll come.

I don't know if cataloging all of that made me feel any better. Meh.

So in addition to/surrounding all of the stuff I just recounted, I'm not happy with my shape right now. We dropped our gym membership quite a while ago due to cost and conflicting schedules, and I haven't been good about working out at home, even though I can totally do that.

I may be within about 5 pounds of my lowest weight, but that's just an indicator that weight does not equal fitness. I am significantly flabbier than I used to be, and not happy about it.

So I've been trying - small steps - to do at least a little. I now spend about 10-15 minutes every morning doing yoga (just a series of sun salutations) and pushups and ab exercises. That's it. I hope that if I can at least fit that in on a regular basis, it'll allow for some small improvement. And I'm trying to do things like take the stairs and go for bike rides when it's possible, but I'm trying not to stress myself out by beating myself up for not getting workouts in. Small steps.

When you see me, please feel free to ask me if I remembered to do my little morning yoga+ routine that day. I'd appreciate it.

My handyman might be looking for work in the near future, as he finishes up over here. He charges $25/hour and pretty skillful, especially in woodworking. It's delightful that you have a buyer for your loft, and that you have so much time to get moved.

Also, go go yoga!

Thank you for the potential-handyman-recommendation. Once we figure out what the heck we're doing with that, I will probably follow up with you!

Yes, it is wonderful that we have a buyer and have a month or so to move. Helps a lot.

Thanks! I don't think we're going to try flying there and driving from there, but you never know. It'd be awesome to see you and the sprogling!

Yay for a commitment free Con. I can't wait to see y'all and hang out.

And yay for a loft buyer, that's great you've got that lined up.

Every little bit of exercise helps, and sometimes doing less intense exercise is better... there was just an NYT article about more moderate exercise being better than more intense exercise for longevity:

It'll be lovely to see you guys at Con. And yes! Yay for a loft buyer!

That's an interesting article - I wonder if they differentiated in the study at all in the 1-20 mile range? That is, did they look at 1-5, 5-10,10-15, 15-20, or just 1-20? Seems like a big variance between the jogger who goes a mile or so a week and the one who goes 19!

But thank you - yes, every little bit helps.

yeah... I've got blinders on until after this weekend, and haven't worked out at all for over a week. I'm committed to one larger techie project for the Space Lounge, but I really don't know what will happen with anything costumey. Eh. I don't really have any brainspace to think about it.

We're not going to the desert, so you're welcome to use our stuff.

Hey, remember we've got massage appointments coming up!

Yay massage! And I look forward to you being able to have some brainspace back after this weekend. Good luck. I'm sure it will be awesome.

Thanks for the stuff-offer, although of course I wish you were going.

Eeek! It's all good stuff, but wow, you are over-committed.

I'm glad that we get to see you soon despite all that. We're truly looking forward to it.

I haven't even taken pictures of the MFC costumes; I'll have to do that... Although I'm not very proud of them as I had to bang them out at high speed and under a tight budget with some serious constraints: must be 100% cotton or otherwise not made of synthetic material that melts if it burns, must be possible to move easily and in some cases quite athletically in them, must be easy to change costumes quickly, etc. Well, they're done as of late last night, so I can be proud of them being FINISHED anyway!

But the Green Lantern dress I look forward to sharing.

I have been taking notes on the exercises I learn from my trainer that can be done without equipment at home, in the hope of keeping up a somewhat effective workout schedule while on paternity leave. I can share the document with you if you'd like; variety of exercise types can be good for keeping up interest.
