1. What did you do in 2009 that you'd never done before?

Saw a president get inaugurated (in person, not on TV), moved from DC to MN, got married, bought a place to live. Pretty big year for firsts.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

Let's see. 2009's resolutions were:
* do my best to minimize the stress of an impending move, job hunt, and wedding, and survive all three with my sanity and relationships intact: achieved
* go back to the gym and get my body and knees back into shape, such that I can do another triathlon: achieved
* make the most of the time I have where I am, and with the people I'm with: achieved, although of course I wish I'd done more.

I will probably make more for next year. I don't know what they will be, though. Quite likely the classic "eat right and exercise" will come into play. Well, I already eat right. But I have fallen off the exercise wagon after the summer move.

3. How will you be spending New Year's Eve?

I don't know yet. There's a party it looks like a number of people I know will be at, so that's definitely in the running. But of course there are competing events. We have to decide if we want to go to more than one thing.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

Thankfully, no. I am very, very grateful for this and would like to request the same for 2010.

5. What countries did you visit?

We went to Montreal, Canada, which was totally awesome and made me want to move there. I didn't go anywhere else other than driving from DC to MN.

6. What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009?

A job that I like and that is meaningful to me. Bonus points if it in some way relates to what I got my MA in.

7. What date from 2009 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

July 24 - we got married. I'm really supposed to remember it. And also, it was a damn fun wedding!

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

See #2 about resolutions? The first one, about surviving all of the stress with my sanity intact? I did it. And almost everything went really well.

9. What was your biggest failure?

I don't know if I should call this a failure on my part, or just bad luck and the economy being crappy, but not having a permanent job that I like feels pretty failure-tastic right now.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Only standard flu stuff. Yay! That was relatively easily cured.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

Single item? Our loft.
Whole event? The wedding & reception, and all the stuff that went with that. I don't regret a thing except wishing I had more time to spend with everyone that day. So I guess I wish I'd bought a time machine.

12. Where did most of your money go?

Between the loft and the wedding, I spent a huge amount of money this year. Wow.

13. What song will always remind you of 2009?

I hate to be all wedding focused but I'm gonna say Friday I'm In Love because we picked that to be our "first dance" song.
I wish I remembered a specific song from the inaugural concert.

14. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Read, written, been creative.

15. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Worried.

16. What was your favorite TV program?

Battlestar Galactica, The Wire, & Foyle's War... I kind of like Dexter but not as much as the others.

17. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

No. I don't really hate very many people. Today, I have to admit, I kind of hate Citibank, but they're not people.

18, 19, 20: I am very sad to say that these questions, about books read, music discovered, and films watched, only serve to showcase what a shockingly small amount of media I consumed in the last year. I'm sad about that.

18. What was the best book you read?

Right now, what's coming to mind is a Tim Powers book called The Drawing of the Dark. But I don't know if that was really the best book I read, or just one of the most recent.

19. What was your greatest musical discovery?

Um, I learned that I like Lily Allen a lot. So original. Also, I'm happy to move back to a place where I can get The Current on the radio. I love listening to it, and it helps make my drive much more pleasant. Yes, I'm a member.

20. What was your favorite film of this year?

I feel like I barely watched any movies this year. I did see Up, and I really enjoyed it. And Star Trek was just awesome. It was exactly what I wanted it to be, and then some. Oh, and Watchmen, that was excellent. Coraline was good but I mostly include it here because it inspired our Halloween costumes. I know I've missed a lot of movies.

21. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I went to a conference about intercultural communication, and that night I went to a burlesque show. It was fun! Oh, and I'm 33.

22. What kept you sane?

[livejournal.com profile] azure_armand, exercise, planning, and steady progress.

23. Who did you miss?

Mostly, my Aunt Marilyn and my friend Rachel ([livejournal.com profile] jcoppercorn).

24. Who was the best new person you met?

This year was more about getting back to seeing people I'd met a long time ago.

25. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2009.

Leaping into a whole raft of changes is not always a bad idea. It's scary but can be exhilarating, and even successful.

"Today, I have to admit, I kind of hate Citibank, but they're not people."

it's the faceless entities that are the most hateable.

Ohmygosh, just have to squee at you a little, because Foyle's War fans are few and far between, and we must stick together!

If I don't see you New Year's Eve, I hope you have a great one, and hopefully we will see more of y'all in '10.
