Can someone explain to me what the big deal is with Dreamwidth? What its appeal is, and whether people are migrating over there entirely, or duplicating posts, or separating content depending on where they're posting...?

It's an open-source social networking/journaling service, much like LJ. I believe it's been founded by former LJ folks. It has a few features that LJ doesn't, like being able to fine-tune who has access to your journal and filtered posting.

I created an account just to look around over there. They've got a feature that lets you cross-post to LJ and will eventually support other services.

I'm not migrating there, unless something drastic happens. It's blocked at work, while LJ is not.

LJ has custom friends group filters that you can use for posting and/or viewing.

We are not migrating. We did get our same journal name there, but won't use it for anything unless most of our LJ community gives up this ship.

Just another blog site. Seems like every time a new one shows up a bunch of people decide to move their journals.

It's basically a mirror of LJ, for people who are scared of Teh Evil Russians. They "encircle" people instead of "friending" them, in hopes of avoiding drama. And...I'm not sure why everyone's excited about the filtered posting--does everybody else's LJ account not have custom friends lists?

Right now it seems to be used by, 1) people who are using it as a backup and duplicating all content to both places, and 2) people who are horribly disillusioned by LJ's attempts to make a profit and some drama about fanfic a while back.

I snagged an account just to register my LJ name - I may post one or two things over there just to keep it from looking/feeling like cybersquatting. I did the same thing when facebook and myspace rolled around - just claimed a name. Turned out to be useful down the road on FB, not so much on myspace....
