I support Obama because I believe he represents me better than any other schmuck out there. I support him because I want a smart president this time, and one who can orate is an additional bonus. I support him because he has a capacity to inspire people, and that's not just important on the campaign trail. I support him because he's not saying he wants to amend the Constitution to illegalize gay marriage (among other stupid things he's not saying). He's not perfect, of course, but I think he can be a good president.

Even Colin Powell endorsed him. Even the Salt Lake Tribune endorsed him! But still I will repost this:

TOP 5 REASONS OBAMA SUPPORTERS SHOULDN'T REST EASY

1. The polls may be wrong. This is an unprecedented election. No one knows how racism may affect what voters tell pollsters—or what they do in the voting booth. And the polls are narrowing anyway. In the last few days, John McCain has gained ground in most national polls, as his campaign has gone even more negative.

2. Dirty tricks. Republicans are already illegally purging voters from the rolls in some states. They're whipping up hysteria over ACORN to justify more challenges to new voters. Misleading flyers about the voting process have started appearing in black neighborhoods. And of course, many counties still use unsecure voting machines.

3. October surprise. In politics, 15 days is a long time. The next McCain smear could dominate the news for a week. There could be a crisis with Iran, or Bin Laden could release another tape, or worse.

4. Those who forget history... In 2000, Al Gore won the popular vote after trailing by seven points in the final days of the race. In 1980, Reagan was eight points down in the polls in late October and came back to win. Races can shift—fast!

5. Landslide. Even with Barack Obama in the White House, passing universal health care and a new clean-energy policy is going to be hard. Insurance, drug and oil companies will fight us every step of the way. We need the kind of landslide that will give Barack a huge mandate.

If you agree that we shouldn't rest easy, please sign up to volunteer at your local Obama office by clicking here:

I am keeping my fingers crossed that he'll win. These may be American elections, but the outcome is just as important for the rest of the world...

It's not just about crossing your fingers and hoping. Tell everyone you know to vote. Anytime you see someone with Obama gear, tell them to tell everyone they know to vote. Bug people. Volunteer.

Make a difference. We all have a responsibility.

Just so you know, I agree with you, but as [livejournal.com profile] wavebreaker is Dutch (correct me if I'm wrong) and lives in the Netherlands, she'll have less chances to tell people with actual voting rights in the US to exercise them.

I wish I could, but unfortunately we're not allowed to vote in the US elections in the Netherlands... ;-)

As far as I know, all the Americans I know will be voting for Obama. And like I said, I will most definitely keep my fingers crossed...

Just so. I'm breaking my teeth against the fact that no matter how idiotic, underhanded or low McCain's campaign gets, some people will still vote for him, will enthusiasticly support him, and will do anything in their power to ensure he gets into the White House. Even if Obama wins (send the day) there will be those that will again do anything in their power to damage the man.

The GOP is rapidly becoming a party of the Hard Right, which given the history of Hard Right parties, scares the daylights out of me.
