Reception venues

All right, Twin Citians: what are some cool places to have a reception?

Any suggestion is welcome, but if more details help:
- 150 people, probably
- dancing is a must, band is not required
- must be legal to have alcohol there
- will be at night (8 PM or later)
- bonus points for artsy, off-beat, etc.

Will there be cake?

Do you want to bring in your own cake, or use the venue's caterer? I found that my desire to bring in my own cake limited my options.

If no cake or you're content with the venue's catering options, then you've more choices.

I'll look at the list I had in a MN Bride magazine from last year and see what they recommend when I get home. That list is where I got the idea of having our reception at The Local.

Some thoughts, though your list of venues is far larger than mine is.

Consider
-Theaters (Like the reception that I went to at Valley of the Dolls')
-Museums, one of the most memorable receptions I've ever been to was in the Children's museum in St. Louis. The entire bridal party went down 2 story slides in the building.
- How many kids will be coming. Mansions, may be great places to have receptions but if you have lots of kids coming then someplace with lots of ornate breakables might not be the best bet.

Also let me know and I can hook you up with the florist for my wedding. She is based out of MSP and she was really really good and great to work with.

The Columbia Heights golf course has a very nice venue, and so does Wirth Park. I have been to a wedding at each, and the first marriage is one that has survived, while the second one did not. These are part of the MPLS parks system.

Do you have a month for this delightful occasion? Is getting outdoor space something you want for warm weather? I think one can rent the Cedar Cultural Center when they are in their summer off-season. The dance floor is nice, they have a patio, and a liquor license, and they have chairs, though you'd have to rent tables if you want them.

We have found that our big occasions work well when there is a place for people to escape the music if they'd like to, and I now advise everyone planning a wedding or big splashy party to have quieter and livelier spaces if that is possible.

Our reception was at the MacNamara Center on the U Campus - very modern and hip. Just as an FYI.

for funky; Bryant Lake Bowl might still do private functions, Theatre de La Jeune Lune went tits up and the theatre space might also be available for one night rental. The theatre that Theater Mu always uses for shows at 7 corners is a nice venue too, and is next to a hotel which is food for out of town guests, plus it's a great area.

The suburban world theater in uptown is pretty neat, plenty of room for dancing and the decor is fab.
It's not far from the sculputure garden so that's a plus too.
They do some catering i would bet that since it's in uptown, they can do vegan.
