I haven't posted anything lately that wasn't both private, and about major job stuff. I suppose that's been because that becomes the focus of things...

But life has actually been pretty full with a lot of visiting lately. We went to MN a while back, and I never posted about that weekend, but it was good. We got to spend time with [livejournal.com profile] azure_armand's family, and hung out with [livejournal.com profile] fayde and [livejournal.com profile] sinister_dr_x. We watched the Rockits kick ass (metaphorically, unlike the brawling we saw from some other teams) and saw a lot of people at that game. We never get to see everyone in one visit, but that would be exhausting, so I am happy that we had some good quality time instead.
Then [livejournal.com profile] xatharine and [livejournal.com profile] qubit visited us. I took a day off and looked at the cherry trees with them. They were really pretty and eventually I will have some totally cliche photos of cherry blossoms to share with you. But I am too lazy to hook my camera up to my computer, right now. We enjoyed good food and fun with our neighbors one night, and went out to fabulous Restaurant Nora another night. It was low key but again, I felt like we had a really nice time together and maybe we even got [livejournal.com profile] qubit to relax a bit.
Last weekend was more for the locals, with some hanging out with M & R, who aren't on lj, at Russia House one night (much vodka, raucous and amusing, but on the way out some drunk girl with a lit cigarettes burned my leg - and burned through the stockings I was wearing - grr) and at our place another (dinner, much less booze). And I got to the fabric store to get supplies for some stuff I'm working on.
This weekend, we look forward to the visit of [livejournal.com profile] alisgray, with bonus [livejournal.com profile] gunn at least for dinner on Friday. That should be a good time. And the weather's even cheering up now!

I haven't been doing enough sewing lately. Somehow it's hard to motivate myself to work on that when I get home; I just want to veg out on the couch. I need to change that somehow. Suggestions for motivating/finding time?

I suggest you look at the clock, and devote 5 minutes to your project, and that at the end of the 5, if you're not enjoying it, give yourself permission to try again later.

This is just a strategy for getting started, because I think once you're started, you'll keep going.

Changing tasks—or rather, deciding to change tasks—is the thing I find most exhausting. When I really need to get something done, I allot an hour to sit down and list out every minute step in the project. Usually, this only takes a few minutes, but alloting an hour for it ensures that I don't skip it between other things, and it always feels good to finish early.

Then, some other day, start with the first thing on the list, which shouldn't take more than half an hour, and then stop. If you find that you've been stuck on one item for an hour or more, break it into smaller pieces on your list.

Basically, my goal is to come up with something useful I can accomplish for a project in 5-10 minutes, and schedule about half an hour to work on that project (and do just one step) every day.

Once I've been nibbling on something for a few days, it gets into my consciousness and I start thinking about it even when I'm not doing it, and eventually it gets easier to do it.

This is basically what I had to do when we were packing up and getting ready to move to the new house.
