Germany

In non-political news, I'm off to Germany on Friday. I'm going to go stay with my folks for a bit while my dad's recovering from his surgery. It'll be a really short trip - I'll come back on Tuesday. But it's better than nothing. I'll be in Marl (near Dusseldorf) and if anyone knows of anything one absolutely must do there, please tell me; but I doubt I'll be doing much touristing overall.

Düsseldorf's a great city to walk around and soak in, but I don't remember any one particular thing as being spectacular. My favorite parts were Altstadt and one neighboring district (Karlstadt, perhaps).

They gave Dad beer in the hospital. I thought "only in Germany!"

Yes! Because beer is a food! A food, I tell you! And we all need lots of food. Good food. Beer food.

And the type of beer that is special to the region you're going to is 'Altbier'. Alts are hard to pin down for a overall flavour profile-biscuity and fruity, some hoppier than others but none where hops overwhealm; and if you get into old-town Dusseldorf, you're standing on Altbier's home turf. Get your hands on at least two different brewers' altbiers, and you'll see what I mean.
