It is ridiculous that 3 months of birth control pills cost me $105 today. With my (apparently somewhat lame, about 50% coverage) prescription plan/health insurance.

Wanna bet that a prescription for Viagra would have cost less?

my mirena IUD, that lasts five years, was about $400-500 without insurance.

if you want something long term, you might want to look into that. i've been really happy with it.

yeah we have a $100 deductible on perscriptions and It costs me $100 for one month every January and it is shocking every time-- but through the mail it's $2 a month for the rest of the year.....

Actually, a little research (http://www.google.co.za/search?sourceid=navclient&hl=en-GB&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4PBEA_en-GBZA234ZA234&q=viagra+cost+more+than+birth+control) makes it appear that Viagra costs about 10 times as much, dose for dose, as a single day's supply of birth control pills. I guess I wasn't totally surprised: vanity sells, after all. The big difference is that many more medical aids cover ED medication than cover BC, which means that the average Viagra-swallower is less out of pocket than the average BC dependent - and of course, there are many more of the latter than the former. But if you have an intelligent medical aid that doesn't consider BC eeeebil eebil, you're probably getting your BC at a relatively fair price re: Viagra.

What would really make sense is for male medical aid clients to be able to subsidise half of their female partner's BC costs. It's hardly a selfish expense.

It's not just you, Beth. In fact, you're better off than many (oddly few people ever find comfort in that...)

Birth Control went through the roof over the summer. It had to do with changes in medicare brought about by the "Deficit Reduction Act" that basically removed all the incentives companies had to offer colleges and other places low cost BC. The pill, the patch, nuvaring, it all went through the frickin' roof. From 10$ to 40$ a month is quite common. Think it'll be enough to get some people active politically? Maybe interested a little bit in population politics? *sigh*

Have you tried getting a generic version of your pill? Mine costs about $20.00/month...or at least my old perscription used to. Target is good at giving out generic brands as well.

Is that what it costs now? YIKES! Mine cost $20/month after the 80% coverage through my husband's employee benefits, in the 90s (when the exchange rate was something like $0.80US per $1.00CDN). That's why I opted for a tubal ligation after my second child was born: who needs to spend that much money every month for the next two or three decades? (Provincial health care covered the cost of the surgery.... but not the T3s I had to take for a couple of days after. :-)

weird, that seems unusually high. is mail-order an option for you? i know that's muuuch cheaper for me under my plan...just $40/every 3 months.
