I was waffling over whether I should take the next Arabic session or not (pro: Arabic is awesome, I'm finally learning something, if I stop now I have almost nothing; con: the intensive class is HARD) and had decided to do it. But the choice was then taken away from me; not enough people signed up so the course was canceled. What a bummer. Sort of a relief, but mostly a bummer.

That, stinks.

Are there no alternatives for you?

Well, no alternatives that would be free. :-/ I could take a course elsewhere, but ... I'd have to pay full price.

Oh yeah. Also, I can take a class in the spring... but nothing will be the right level for me before that. Or I can try self-study.

Can you sign up with the Arabic prof. for an independent study? I presume that would be covered by your tuition reimbursement program.

I might be able to. Honestly, though, I'm not sure how that would work out. Profs don't get paid much for independent studies (if anything) so they tend to spend less time on them. But I don't think it would be helpful to spend much less than the 7.5 hours/week I've been spending on it. I'll have to think about it. I already emailed the prof asking for his syllabus, so we'll see if he is interested in working with me. Thanks for the idea.

If you compare the benefits of an independent study class with that of a real class, it seems pretty weak. But if you compare it to the benefits of studying on your own with a book and a tape, it starts to seem like a better option. You wouldn't have to cover the same amount of material as they would in a real class, it could be whatever you and the prof agree to.

That last comment was me; sorry I didn't realized I wasn't logged in.
