Thank you.

So a circus of calling airports in Budapest, and then today, Paris, etc., ensued. Believe it or not, the computer has been located and they will probably FedEx it to us. But still! What a strange request.

Today:
Subject: Garage Band Task Force
Message:
Dear [figment]:
[PTJ] suggested that I contact you as a good first step in trying to help identify a practice space for our students who play alternative music and are not actively involved in the AU music program.
The music program/Katzen Center, unfortunately, does not have either the space or the equipment to meet the needs of these students but, because they are musicians I would like to try to advocate on their behalf.
I am wondering if there is not some out of the way corner on campus that could accommodate some responsible students like [student] (please see his letter below) and support them in their musical endeavors.
I do not want our university to represent itself as not embracing the full range of artistic expression, nor do I want the music program to seem elitist and judgmental it is, as I said before, a matter of not having the resources.
I see this as an opportunity to do something for our students that is very positive.
Do you have any ideas about where we could go from here?
Thank you so much for your time and consideration.
Yours, sincerely,
[Music Program Director]

What is strange about this is ... how on earth can I help? We do not have space. All we can offer is creative thinking about who DOES have space... I am still a little baffled by this one, although the implication that "we have all the answers" is flattering.

It sucks having a reputation of being able to resolve any problem.

Except it means you're doing better than everyone else, and that's something to be proud of.

Ya, but in my experience, the pride tends to be outlasted by the nearly endless string of problems people bring to you with the expectation that you'll some how find the solution they either couldn't find, or couldn't bother to find.

But then again, I'm a cynic.

I can think of few reputations I'd rather have. Maybe "good listener," but that's about it.

Yes.
What the smart bird said.

I only left my computer at airport security once, in Las Vegas. Luckily, I remembered while I was still in the airport, and I was able to go back to the security checkpoint and retrieve it.

They had a whole procedure for this in place; I'm sure lots of people leave all sorts of valuable and personal things at airport security.

Thankfully I've only done that once too. When I went back to claim it the security folks asked me to describe my laptop. My old laptop was distinctive too - "It's the only one with bunny and monkey stickers on the lid" worked just fine.
